Poland's government has announced a reintroduction of VAT cuts and daily price caps on fuel, aiming to lower costs for drivers amidst the ongoing energy crisis. This move, known as CPN, will be in effect from August 17th to 31st, reducing VAT on fuels from 23% to 8% and setting retail consumer price caps daily by the energy minister. However, this decision comes with a significant financial burden for the state budget, as similar measures earlier this year cost an estimated 4.7 billion zloty. The government's efforts to lower fuel prices have been met with criticism from opposition-aligned President Karol Nawrocki, who argues that fuel companies will pass on the costs to consumers, potentially increasing prices. The initial implementation of CPN in March, in response to soaring fuel prices due to the Middle East conflict, successfully brought Polish fuel prices to among the lowest in the EU. Since its withdrawal in June, prices have risen, prompting the government's reintroduction of the measures. Economists attribute the recent inflation acceleration to higher fuel prices, which have now started to fall but remain elevated. The Polish state energy giant, Orlen, has posted record profits, benefiting from the turmoil in the Middle East. Despite the government's efforts, critics argue that the subsidies should have been introduced earlier, and the future of fuel prices remains uncertain.
